Actor Nick Turturro, from many movies and shows including Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing and Damon's upcoming film The List, talks about diabetic warning signs and how diabetes has affected his family. Damon also discusses the ways he brings awareness to the disease through his work as a director who's diabetic.

Cooking For Dame: Lemon Garlic Broccoli with Beef Bacon

This week, Wifey for Lifey is back in the kitchen cooking up a light dish featuring one of Dame’s favorite ingredient when he ate meat ... Beef Bacon (a great alternative for those who don’t eat pork!) Raquel uses the Beef Bacon as an addition to a lightly Sautéed Lemon Garlic Broccoli base to create a delicious low-carb, high-protein meal. Another great trick about this recipe is you can substitute any of your favorite proteins to produce a lighter or heavier meal that won’t spike your blood sugar. Find the recipe below:

Lemon Garlic Broccoli with Beef Bacon:
*Use organic / Non-GMO whenever possible


3 large broccoli heads, with stems spiralized
6 bacon strips, cooked
2 TBSP butter
1 cup chicken broth
¼ TBSP red pepper flakes
Salt and pepper to taste
5 medium garlic cloves
Juice from 1 lemon, and zest from half of lemon
3 TBSP grated parmesan cheese


1. Slice off the broccoli florets, leaving the stems as long as possible
2. Spiralize broccoli stems to noodles
3. Heat butter in saucepan on medium heat, add garlic
4. Add broccoli florets, noodles and chicken broth. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until tender
5. Squeeze in ½ lemon, red pepper flakes and lemon zest
6. Top off with chopped beef bacon
7. Remove from heat, add cheese and serve warm

The Insulin Shoot Out continues this week as we sit down with Ron James, President of Ivolve Media Group, who gets to ask CEO of MannkindMike Castagna about the diabetes industry, insulin profit margins, and the ins and out of the healthcare system. To Ron’s surprise, he learns from Mike that Afrezza - the only inhaled insulin - is CHEAPER THAN INJECTABLE INSULIN.

Cooking for Dame: Swedish Meatballs

This week on Cooking for Dame, Wifey for Lifey explains why she loves taking time out to cook family meals and how the kitchen truly is the heartbeat of the home. She creates a delicious version of Swedish Meatballs that can be altered as an appetizer or meal portion, depending on your needs. As the base is mostly beef, this is a great high-protein snack that will keep you full.
Recipe below!

Swedish Meatballs:
*Use organic / Non-GMO whenever possible


2 TBPS butter
2 TBPS flour
1 ½ cup beef broth
⅓ cup minced onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp soy sauce
¼ cup sour cream
Kosher salt and pepper to taste

1 ½ lbs lean, ground beef
½ cup breadcrumbs
½ cup butter cracker crumbs
¼ tsp Allspice
Kosher salt & white pepper to taste
½ cup milk
⅓ cup minced onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp soy sauce
2 eggs - 1 egg & 1 egg white


1. Heat butter on medium heat
2. Sauté onion and garlic
3. Add flour and mix.
4. Add beef broth and let simmer.
5. Add in soy sauce and sour cream, give it all a good whisk.
6. Reduce heat to low, cover and let thicken.
7. Add in rosemary. Set aside.

1. Combine breadcrumbs and butter cracker crumbs. Set aside.
2. Pre-heat oven to 400
3. Melt butter over medium heat
4. Add in all-spice, salt and pepper. Mix together
5. Add in onion and garlic. Mix in soy sauce to pan.
6. Add milk to pan and stir until mixed
7. Pour this over the bread and cracker crumbs, mix until a paste forms, let cool in fridge.
8. Once cool, combine the beef, eggs, and breadcrumbs in a bowl, mix well.
9. Grease baking sheet
10. Roll mixture into 1.5 inch balls
11. Bake for 20 min
12. Serve with preserve and sour cream

Anthony's Story: Discovering Afrezza

This week, Anthony returns to share more of his Diabetic Story and speak on how back in the day he was left to search for diabetes information on his own. The healthcare industry wasn’t informative and didn’t promote diabetic innovations. This was a time when there were no carb counts on food nutrition facts and his doctor was providing inaccurate diet advice. After a long journey, Anthony finally discovered Afrezza and has changed his habits for the better.

Vegan Chocolate Mousse:
*Use organic / Non-GMO whenever possible


1 ripe avocado
¼ cup raw cocoa powder
¼ cup non-dairy milk
5 dates, soaked for 4-6 hours
1 tsp natural vanilla extract
Fruit for garnish


1. Place everything in the blender. Blend on high until smooth
2. Garnish with fruit and serve

Truth in Medicine: Choosing Healthy Habits Pt. II

This week on Truth in Medicine, we’ve got Nutritionist and Fitness Guru Dr. Zarif and Chief Medical Officer of Afrezza Dr. Ray Urbanski on the couch to speak about the history of diabetes management, innovative glucose monitoring tools, and impulsivity. Cooking For Dame: Leftover Breakfast Frittata

This week on Cooking for Dame, we get a visit from a very special guest, Jeff DachisCEO of One Drop and fellow Type 1 Diabetic who drops in to taste Raquel’s healthy and simple Breakfast Frittata (AKA crustless quiche). Raquel loves how easy this dish is to make and likes to throw in some of Dame’s favorites - potatoes, broccoli and beef bacon. The best part about this dish is that depending on what you like, you can get really creative with what you add in! 
Pro Tip: Take all of your left-overs in the fridge and throw them in with free range eggs for a quick, delicious, low-carb breakfast. 😉

Leftover Breakfast Frittata:
*Use organic / Non-GMO whenever possible


1 medium onion, caramelized
1/3 cup of mini roasted potatoes
1 cup broccoli florets (pre-cooked)
1 tsp leeks
Beef bacon
Kosher salt to taste
⅓ cup of milk
10 large eggs (you can sub egg whites)
⅓ - ½ cup of shredded cheese


1. Pre-heat oven to 375
2. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until blended, add in the 1/3 cup of milk
3. Lightly grease pie pan. Add eggs.
4. Add any leftovers you have - potatoes, broccoli, sautéed onions, leeks, and bacon. Salt to taste.
5. Top with cheese
6. Bake for 20 min at 375 or until eggs are cooked through

We’re back with a new segment of Truth in Medicine with our doctors Diabetologist David M. Kayne, M.D. and Naturopathic Doctor Llaila Afrika. They take a look at the effects of working out and how consistent exercise can be beneficial for diabetics. During exercise, their muscle tissue is able to regulate sugar more efficiently and taking insulin can actually increase their muscle mass. 💪🏾

Cooking For Dame: Chia Seed Chocolate Pudding

This week in Raquel’s kitchen, Wifey for Lifey aims to satisfy Dame’s sweet tooth with a Chia Seed Chocolate Pudding. If you didn’t know, cooking with superfoods like chia seeds is very beneficial for diabetics as they help naturally lower blood sugar. Be sure to add in a little cacao for that chocolaty taste, coconut milk for smoothness, and agave for that sweet kick. And voila! Now you have a great dessert or late night snack. 👌🏽

Chia Seed Chocolate Pudding:
*Use organic / Non-GMO whenever possible


1 ¼ cups unsweetened non-dairy milk
¼ cup chia seeds
3 TBSP raw cacao powder
1 TBSP agave
Fruits for garnish


1. In a large bowl add in chia seeds, cacao powder and agave
2. Mix until blended together
3. Add milk and mix.
4. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours
5. Garnish with fruit and serve
